Overview

This module is designed to help you understand the key elements that distinguish an average letter of recommendation (LOR) from a truly outstanding one. By reviewing a range of example LORs, you’ll gain valuable insight into how the tone, content, and level of detail can significantly impact the effectiveness of a letter. The goal of this module is to show you exactly what admissions officers look for when reading these letters and how certain elements—such as comparative statements, specific accomplishments, and personal anecdotes—can transform a recommendation from good to great.

Throughout this module, you will read and analyze six different LORs, each ranging from average to above average strong. You will see firsthand how the inclusion of detailed stories and thoughtful comparisons can create a more compelling narrative about the student. The module will focus on helping you understand the critical components that elevate a recommendation letter, including how to highlight leadership, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth. By exploring these real-world examples, you’ll come to recognize the subtle differences that make a letter stand out to admissions officers.

By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate LORs with a critical eye and appreciate how a well-crafted letter can greatly influence an application. You will also be able to reflect on your own academic and extracurricular experiences, considering which details your recommenders might highlight to strengthen your application. Ultimately, this module will equip you with the knowledge needed to ensure that your recommendation letters support your application in the most impactful way possible.

This module will not focus on preparing your brag sheet, which is covered in a separate lesson, but it will help you understand what makes a letter memorable and effective. You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for the elements of a strong LOR and how to guide your recommenders toward writing the best possible endorsement.

Example Letter of Recommendation

Letter of Recommendation Examples

Introduction
Every year, college admissions officers review thousands of recommendation letters, many of which sound similar: “Alex is hardworking, respectful, a pleasure to have in class…” While these qualities are positive, they rarely make a letter stand out from the crowd. The most impactful letters of recommendation are those that go beyond generic praise, offering specific and compelling stories about the student that reveal their unique qualities and readiness to thrive in a rigorous academic environment.

This is why carefully analyzing the differences between letters of recommendation is so important. A truly standout letter often includes all of the following:

  • A comparative statement (e.g., "This student falls within the Top X% in my Y years of teaching")
  • Vivid anecdotes that show how the student went above and beyond expectations both in and out of class
  • Examples of how they positively impacted their peers.
  • Description of personal or family circumstances, offering insight into the student’s character and resilience in overcoming challenges.

This is why it's essential to build personal relationships with your teachers and share important details about your background—whether through a brag sheet or casual conversations—even if some details feel uncomfortable to talk about. Teachers can only write a powerful and detailed letter if they know you on a deeper level.

Remember, nearly all recommendation letters that admissions offices receive are positive. What makes a letter powerful isn’t just that it’s positive, but how positive it is. The difference between an “overwhelmingly gushing” letter and one that’s simply “good” can make all the difference in how you stand out to admissions committees.

Example #1 (Strong):

It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Emily for admission to MIT. In my 25 years of teaching AP Physics and Honors Mathematics, Emily stands out as the most exceptional student I have had the privilege of working with — among 25 years of students at the nation’s #1 high ranked school. Her intellectual curiosity, unmatched work ethic, and leadership both in and out of the classroom make her a truly unique individual who will contribute immensely to any academic community.

I first met Emily in her sophomore year when she enrolled in my AP Physics class—two years earlier than most students. From the beginning, she exhibited a natural grasp of complex concepts that many of her senior classmates struggled with. Her willingness to push beyond standard coursework was evident when she proposed an independent research project focused on the practical application of quantum mechanics in renewable energy systems. Emily designed a comprehensive experiment, secured lab time at a local university, and ultimately presented her findings at a regional science fair, where she earned first place. This level of initiative and intellectual risk-taking is rare, and it sets Emily apart from even the brightest students I’ve encountered.

Emily's contributions to our school community extend far beyond the classroom. She serves as the captain of our Math Olympiad team, where she not only leads practices but also mentors younger students. Last year, under her guidance, our team advanced to a top ranking at the Harvard MIT Math Tournament for the first time in a decade. Emily also took the lead in organizing TJ’s Peer Tutoring program, volunteering over 100 hours to help struggling students in subjects ranging from algebra to calculus. Her ability to explain difficult concepts in simple terms shows her deep understanding and genuine care for others' learning.

What I admire most about Emily is her resilience and emotional maturity. During her junior year, her father lost his job, putting significant financial stress on her family. Rather than allowing this to derail her academic focus, Emily used it as motivation to take on a part-time job while maintaining her top rank in our most rigorous courses. She approached me privately to discuss how she could best balance her commitments, demonstrating foresight and responsibility far beyond her years. Through it all, Emily remained not just a high-performing student but a compassionate classmate and a humble leader.

In terms of personality, Emily is warm, approachable, and deeply respected by both her peers and teachers. She is the type of student who lights up a room with her enthusiasm and kindness, effortlessly fostering collaboration among her classmates. I have no doubt that Emily will thrive at MIT, where her curiosity and drive will propel her to even greater heights. MIT’s culture of intellectual exploration and innovation is a perfect match for someone like Emily, who not only seeks out challenges but also creates opportunities for others to grow alongside her.

In conclusion, Emily is one of the most extraordinary students I have had the pleasure of teaching. Her academic excellence, leadership, and unwavering character make her an ideal candidate for MIT. I offer my highest recommendation and look forward to witnessing all she will achieve in the future.

Sincerely,
XXX

Example #2 (Average):

It is my pleasure to recommend Alex for admission to your institution. I have had the opportunity to teach Alex in my Honors Chemistry class this past year, where he consistently demonstrated solid academic performance and a positive attitude towards learning. Alex is a dedicated and hardworking student who approaches his studies with diligence and a genuine desire to improve.

In the classroom, Alex showed a steady commitment to understanding the material. While not always the very top performer, he displayed resilience when faced with challenging concepts. One of his strengths is his willingness to ask questions and seek clarification, which has helped him improve throughout the year. During our unit on chemical equilibrium, Alex took the initiative to work with me during office hours to deepen his understanding, and it was clear that his hard work paid off in his exam performance. His perseverance is commendable, and it reflects his dedication to personal growth.

Outside of his academic work, Alex is also an active member of the school community. He participates in the environmental club, where he’s involved in organizing clean-up events and raising awareness about sustainability. His contributions to the club show his commitment to causes outside the classroom, and he works well with his peers in a team setting. I have always found Alex to be polite, respectful, and well-liked by his classmates.

Alex is a student who consistently strives to do his best. While he may not always excel at every task immediately, his persistence and work ethic have allowed him to steadily improve over time. I believe that these qualities, along with his positive attitude and willingness to learn, will serve him well in a college environment.

In conclusion, I believe Alex would be a valuable addition to your academic community. He has demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to both his academic and extracurricular pursuits. While he may not stand out as the strongest candidate in every individual area, he brings a level of determination and a positive attitude that will help him succeed in college. I recommend Alex with confidence that he will continue to grow and contribute positively to your institution.

Sincerely,

Example #3 (Below Average):

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Chris, who I had the opportunity to teach in my U.S. History class last year. Chris is a dedicated student who consistently completed his work on time and participated in classroom activities. Throughout the year, he demonstrated a steady commitment to his studies and maintained a positive attitude.

In class, Chris showed a solid understanding of the material, particularly during our units on the American Revolution and the Civil War. While his participation was not always frequent, he contributed thoughtfully to discussions when called upon. Chris is a student who takes his responsibilities seriously, and his effort in assignments and projects reflected a genuine interest in the subject matter.

In addition to his academic work, Chris is a respectful and kind individual. He worked well with his peers during group projects and was always cooperative and easy to work with. Though I’m not aware of any particular leadership roles or extracurricular involvement, Chris was a positive presence in the classroom and got along well with others.

Overall, Chris is a reliable and steady student who approaches his studies with a quiet determination. While his academic achievements may not always stand out, his strong work ethic and positive attitude will serve him well in a college setting. I believe Chris has the potential to succeed as he continues to grow, and I recommend him as a capable and committed student.

Sincerely,

Comparative Analysis

In comparing the three letters of recommendation, it becomes clear how certain elements make a letter more compelling and impactful in the admissions process. Let’s break down the differences between the letters for Emily, Alex, and Chris:

Comparative Statements and Context:
The strongest letter (for Emily) opens with a bold comparative statement, “the most exceptional student I have had the privilege of working with in 25 years of teaching at the nation’s #1 ranked school.” This immediately establishes Emily as a standout student, not just in general, but against a competitive and long-established baseline. The letter for Alex, by contrast, lacks such a strong statement, describing him as a “dedicated and hardworking student” without comparative context, which diminishes the sense of uniqueness. In Chris’s letter, there is no comparative statement at all, making the recommendation feel generic.

Anecdotes and Specificity:
Emily’s letter is rich with specific anecdotes that illustrate her academic and leadership abilities. The teacher describes her proposing an independent research project, securing lab time at a university, and winning first place at a science fair. This is coupled with her leading a Math Olympiad team and mentoring younger students. These concrete examples demonstrate Emily’s initiative and intellectual curiosity.
Alex’s letter, while positive, includes fewer detailed anecdotes. There is mention of his work during a unit on chemical equilibrium and his participation in the environmental club, but these examples lack the depth and weight of Emily’s accomplishments.
Chris’s letter, on the other hand, offers minimal specific examples. The teacher mentions his contributions to class discussions during the American Revolution and Civil War units, but there are no extracurricular or leadership examples. The letter becomes more of a summary of Chris’s class performance rather than a portrait of a dynamic student.

Impact on Peers and Leadership:
In Emily’s letter, the impact she has on her peers is significant—she not only participates but also mentors others and fosters collaboration. Her leadership is front and center, both academically and in extracurricular activities. Alex’s letter mentions his participation in group work and his involvement in the environmental club, but without strong leadership examples, his influence on his peers seems moderate. Chris’s letter doesn’t address peer impact or leadership at all, which weakens the narrative of his potential contribution to a college community.

Personal Background and Resilience:
Emily’s letter includes a personal story about her father losing his job and the financial strain on her family. This context highlights her resilience and emotional maturity, showing how she balanced her academic excellence with personal challenges. Alex’s letter, while positive, doesn’t touch on any personal background, and therefore lacks this depth. Chris’s letter similarly remains focused only on academic performance, without offering any personal context that might make him more memorable.

Actionable Insights for Students: To secure a strong letter of recommendation, students should:

  • Provide a Comparative Context: Help teachers see how you stand out, whether it's through grades, leadership, or specific contributions.
  • Share a Brag Sheet: Highlight specific accomplishments, both in and out of class, so teachers can incorporate detailed anecdotes.
  • Show Your Impact: Demonstrate how you've positively influenced peers, led teams, or taken on challenges.
  • Build Personal Relationships with Teachers: Share your personal background and any challenges you’ve faced—teachers can’t write about what they don’t know.

Additional Example #1 (Above Average):

It is with pleasure that I recommend Sarah for admission to your institution. I taught Sarah in both AP Biology and Honors Chemistry, and throughout these courses, she consistently demonstrated her academic ability and intellectual curiosity. Sarah is one of the top students in both classes, and her love for the sciences is evident in her classroom engagement and her independent research pursuits.

Sarah has a remarkable ability to apply scientific concepts beyond textbook knowledge. For her final project in AP Biology, she designed a study on the effects of urban pollution on local insect populations, gathering data from fieldwork and lab analysis. Her initiative to go beyond the standard curriculum speaks to her passion for real-world application of science, a quality I rarely see even in high-achieving students. Her project not only stood out in terms of creativity but also won first place at our school’s Science Fair.

Outside the classroom, Sarah is actively involved in our school’s Science Club, where she serves as vice president. In this role, she has organized guest lectures and led study groups for underclassmen preparing for AP exams. Her leadership in this context reflects her ability to inspire and guide her peers, fostering a collaborative environment where students feel supported. She has also volunteered over 50 hours tutoring students in chemistry, displaying both patience and a genuine interest in helping others succeed.

One of Sarah’s defining characteristics is her resilience. During her junior year, she faced a significant family challenge when her mother was diagnosed with a serious illness. Despite this, Sarah never let her personal circumstances affect her academic performance. She sought out help when needed, worked diligently to stay on top of her coursework, and never wavered in her commitment to her education.

Sarah's combination of academic strength, leadership, and emotional maturity makes her an outstanding candidate. I am confident she will excel in a rigorous college environment and continue to make meaningful contributions to her academic community.

Sincerely,
AP Science Teacher

Additional Example #2 (Well Above Average):

I am excited to recommend David for admission to your college. I have taught David in two mathematics courses—Precalculus and AP Calculus BC—and he has been a standout student in both. His mathematical ability, combined with his creative problem-solving skills, sets him apart from his peers. David is not just a student who memorizes formulas; he is someone who seeks to truly understand the reasoning behind mathematical concepts.

One of David’s most impressive qualities is his ability to approach challenging problems with innovative thinking. In my AP Calculus class, we often tackle difficult problems from national math competitions. David regularly solved these problems using methods that even I hadn’t considered, displaying a high level of originality in his solutions. He was also instrumental in forming a math study group, where he would explain complex topics to other students, further reinforcing his own understanding and helping others improve their skills.

David’s enthusiasm for mathematics extends beyond the classroom. He participates in our school’s Math Team and has earned top placements in several regional competitions. Last year, he also developed a math curriculum for middle school students, volunteering his time to teach at a local community center. His initiative to share his love of math with younger students highlights his leadership skills and commitment to giving back.

One thing I truly admire about David is his perseverance. Math can be a frustrating subject at times, but David never lets setbacks deter him. If he struggles with a particular concept, he dedicates himself to mastering it rather than becoming discouraged. This determination is one of the many reasons I believe David will succeed in a rigorous college program.

I have no doubt that David will thrive in a challenging academic environment and bring the same level of creativity and leadership to your school. I highly recommend him without reservation.

Sincerely,
Math Teacher

Additional Example #3 (Above Average):

It is a pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Olivia, who I have taught in both Honors English and AP Literature. Olivia is a remarkable student whose passion for literature and writing shines through in every aspect of her academic work. She consistently produces thoughtful, well-argued essays that go beyond the surface of the texts we study, engaging with deeper themes and drawing connections to contemporary issues.

One of Olivia’s most notable strengths is her ability to articulate complex ideas both in writing and in class discussions. She has a unique talent for leading insightful conversations, often posing thought-provoking questions that encourage her peers to think more critically about the material. In our discussions on Shakespeare, for example, Olivia brought in historical context and feminist interpretations that added depth to the conversation and challenged her classmates to look at the plays from a different perspective.

Outside of class, Olivia’s dedication to literature is further demonstrated through her role as editor-in-chief of our school’s literary magazine. Under her leadership, the magazine has grown in both size and quality, with Olivia personally mentoring younger writers and organizing creative writing workshops. She has also won several regional awards for her poetry, and her work has been published in national student writing competitions. Her drive to improve her craft and support others in their creative endeavors is truly admirable.

Olivia’s leadership and maturity are not limited to her academic interests. She is also a key member of our school’s debate team, where she has competed at the state level, and she volunteers at a local library, organizing book drives and tutoring younger students in reading and writing.

Olivia is a student who not only excels academically but also uplifts those around her. She is poised to make significant contributions to any college community, and I recommend her with great enthusiasm.

Sincerely,
English Teacher
