Advanced Placement (AP) Courses are rigorous, college-level classes that students can take while still in high school. Offered by the College Board, these courses are designed to give high school students the opportunity to earn college credit and/or qualify for advanced placement in college. The AP program offers courses across multiple disciplines, providing students with the chance to explore subjects in depth, develop college-level academic skills, and demonstrate their knowledge through end-of-course AP exams.

- Note: Some schools offer separate tracks called AP Precalculus AB and AP Precalculus BC, each designed to prepare students for different next-level math courses. Youâll need to plan in advance to choose the right track. AP Precalculus BC is the more rigorous option.

- Difficulty Level: Medium. Known for its challenging concepts and the depth of understanding required, AP Calculus AB still demands significant study and practice. However, this is considered âeasierâ and âless rigorousâ than AP Calculus BC. It is roughly equivalent to Calculus 1 at most universities, so covering one college semesterâs worth of content.

AP Calculus BC
- Description: Building upon the foundation laid in Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC covers all AB topics and extends into additional concepts such as vector functions, parametric equations, polar functions, and the analysis of series. It's designed for students who have a strong grasp of calculus and are looking for a more challenging course.
- Content Covered: Alongside the AB curriculum, BC introduces topics like sequences and series, including convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin series, and polynomial approximations.
- Skills Developed: Further develops analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on complex calculus concepts and their applications. Students also learn to work with functions represented in various forms and to utilize advanced integration techniques.
- Exam Format: Includes multiple-choice and free-response questions, with a portion dedicated to the topics exclusive to BC.
- Difficulty Level: Very Hard. This is considered far more rigorous than AB, this course is for students particularly strong in mathematics and interested in a thorough and advanced study of calculus. This covers both Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 content, so itâs two college semestersâ worth of work. The AP AB Calculus Curriculum is covered within BC Calculus.
- If you are looking into engineering programs or anything STEM-related, we strongly recommend selecting AP BC Calculus directly, rather than doing AP AB Calculus first, as this is a key area where Top-Tier universities will look to ensure you have shown ârigor.â

AP Statistics
- Description: AP Statistics introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. It's an excellent course for students interested in real-world applications of math, such as in social science, business, or research.
- Content Covered: Topics include exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference.

- Exam Format: The exam features both multiple-choice and free-response questions, assessing students' ability to analyze data and interpret statistical results.
- Difficulty Level: Moderate to Hard. While not as conceptually difficult as calculus, AP Statistics requires a strong understanding of data analysis and the application of statistical techniques.
- Note: if youâre pursuing a career in STEM or applying for any top-25 universities, this should NOT be used as a substitute for one of the AP Calculus courses, or taking an even more advanced math course. Many students see AP statistics as an easier path for math. College admissions committees are very familiar with this option and will view it as less rigorous than a core math class. Instead, AP Statistics should nearly always be taken alongside another math course.
