Overview
This module is your month-by-month roadmap for 9th grade, your foundation year. It covers August through July, one month at a time, with the same five-part structure each month: Focus, 3 Must-Dos, 2 Stretch Goals, an "If You're Behind" catch-up path, and a dated Deadlines list. Every month also closes with an Insider Note pointing at free tools, databases, and moves most students at your school will never find on their own.
The Must-Dos are tiered by school type (magnet, strong public with a full AP slate, or a school with limited APs) so every student self-locates without the roadmap feeling generic or alienating. Examples inside Must-Dos calibrate across domains (STEM, humanities, policy, business, arts, writing), so the roadmap works for any lane.
In this module, you will: Lock in the GPA floor that your entire 4-year trajectory depends on. Pick 2–3 serious activity lanes and kill the rest. Overcommitment, not under-commitment, is what kills 9th graders at rigorous schools. Start one real competition, publication, portfolio, or shipped-project track with a concrete May result in mind. Learn how to use Naviance scattergrams, your school's College & Career Center, and the School Profile PDF that colleges actually read. Identify your regional admissions officer at dream schools and start building relationships with the teachers who will write your rec letters in 11th. Decode the Common Data Set, AP score distributions, and the Common App's hidden infrastructure, years before most students figure them out. Build a shortlist of selective summer programs by name for rising-10th applications in January. Use our own resources: the podcast (eduavenues.com/podcast), the EduAvenues blog, every guide already posted in this Classroom, and Neil's book (eduavenues.com/secrets). Each month stands on its own. You do not have to read ahead. If you only do the Must-Dos, you are on track. Stretch Goals are for when you want to push.
Note: By August 1 of 10th grade, you should have an A-level GPA, one concrete external credential, one shipped project, and a clear plan for 10th grade's two lanes. Start with August and work forward from there.

| 9th (you) | Set your foundation. Top grades in the hardest course load your school offers. Start producing real results in one lane (competition, publication, shipped project, or portfolio — whatever fits your domain). Pick 2–3 serious activities, not 6. |
| 10th | Commit and build leverage. Narrow to your two lanes. Move from "trying" to "producing results." Target a selective summer, not a pay-to-play pre-college. |
| 11th | Peak. National-level results. Lock in test score one-and-done. Ship research output, a competition placement, or a project that's genuinely yours. |
| 12th | Execute. Building is done. Apply on time, apply well, don't burn out. |
9th grade is your foundation year. Everything from 10th onward assumes a GPA floor, a competition track, and one or two real activities. This is the year to set all three.
